Browning Drake Radio

Found this 20's chasis (looks in excellent shape), says Official Browning Drake Kit Set on black front face plate with 2 dials plus 3 knobs. Chasis has 5 tubes, all 01A. It has 6 connectors for battery, 2 for antenna and 2 for headphones.4 tubes test 75% or better, one is bad. Before I pay $42 for a new 01A, can anyone tell me more about this radio? (schematic, model, how to operate/restore)any tip would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Norbert, don't pay $42 for a new '01A. Shop around for a used one for $10-12.

I see a Model 5-R listed in Slusser's guide, which matches your description, more or less. I don't find a schematic.

This is undoubtedly a tuned-radio-freq set. Nothing complicated since most TRFs are more alike than different, but probably not a good set to start on if it's your first, particularly w/o a schematic.

I hear you Doug, it's hard to resist though, because it's really in great shape and the circuitry seems fairly simple. I worked on a lot of 40's/50's stuff, this is my first 20's and I think to give it a try and buy a used 01A. I checked the 5 funny looking resistors (look like glas fuses) and only one needs to be replaced. On the 5 caps - they are flat, rectangular, metal. Should i replace them all? Now on the power connection: The radio came with a seperate, original Transformer ( Webster Full Wave)instead of a battery, which has 4 outlets: B-, Det., B+90 and Power. The radio has 3 sets of 2 inlets: B Det.+/ B Amp+, +A Bat-/ A Bat+, C Bat-/ C Bat+ . To be sure, what connects to what? Thanks for the help.

The caps you describe are micas. I would leave them alone. They are almost always OK.

Check the battery eliminator to see if it's working. Does it not have an A voltage (5V)? Which hook ups are you unsure of? Post a listing of what you think goes where, and we can check it.

When you say that the tubular glass resistors are OK, do you now have a schematic that tells you for sure what the values should be? These have usually drifted up out of sight.

Check the audio interstage xfmrs, primary and secondaries. They are often open.

Norbert, one more thing puzzles me slightly (but w/o a schematic, we're kind of shooting in the dark here).

This is a 5-tube battery-powered TRF, correct? You say that there are five of the glass, tubular resistors in the radio? I would have expected there to be only one, the detector grid-leak resistor.

The 5R should have two small knobs between the two tuning dials, but it's similar in any case to your set: it has an RF stage, regenerative detector, and three stages of resistance-coupled audio. You can probably run the set with only four tubes, using the first output jack on the panel.

The Webster thingy sounds like a "B eliminator" or B+ power supply. It is incredibly unlikely that it will work without replacement of the filter capacitors. You'd be better off using another power source at first, so you have less to go wrong and think about.

I forgot to mention that Browning-Drakes work extremely well and are a lot of fun to use, once you get the hang of the controls. Your set probably dates from 1926.

You should have five Amperites, fuse looking items for filament control. They are one reason you don't have so many controls. Designed to "keep the temperature or voltage of the vacuum tube filament constant in spite of variations in the voltage of the "A" battery." The RF tube V1 should be a 199 type?
