RCA Victor 85-T Dial Stringing
1/1/2007 9:53:41 PMdon klempka
Hello again all! Just completed recapping RCA model 85-t and I have to admit, it sounds pretty good. I just have two problems now, i have no dial cord or belt in it, have to tune from inside by hand. I can't find any dial cord stringing diagrams anywhere, dont even know if this takes a belt or string. Anyone know where i can get a diagram of this? Also, i checked all the plates on tuning caps, nothing sticking, bent, etc.. but i have a lot of static/scratching between 600-700 on the dial. Any ideas what else to look for? It finally feels good to have a project at least partially operating, since I'm a newbie and I have 2 other projects that are still DOA (sigh..) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Don check out www.the radiofixerupperguy, for the dial stringing guide , as far as the noise be sure the bearings on the tuner are clean and greased usually the little metal plate that provides tension at the end of the tuner will cause noise if dirty

Don,

If the rotor plates are not shorting against the fixed plates of the tuning cap around 600 or 700, check the spring contact (bronse?) between the two sections (or three) of the tuning cap and make sure it is clean. This makes contact between the rotor and fixed parts of the cap. If this is dirty, it can cause static when tuning.

Radiodoc, Thanks for the advice. I cleaned the spring contacts, static is now gone!
I also followed the links previously given to me for dial cord stringing diagrams. I downloaded ALL the pages and the index (never know when I might need them again), but unfortunately, the RCA Victor Model 85-T isn't in the listing. The list covers all models through 1947 and I believe the 85-T is from 1936 or so. Anybody know of any other resources to find the correct diagram for this?
Thanks a Million!

I think I have an 85T at home, I will check this weekend and make a sketch of the dial controls if I have it. Will repost if I do, and you can give me your email address then to send you the sketch. -Alex

Don,
Easier than I thought. It has no string. It is a belt-driven tuner. The dial moves by use of gears behind the face of the tuning capacitor, the belt need only be strung between the tuning knob pulley and the tuning cap pulley (roughly directly vertical alignment, if that helps identify them). I used a sewing machine belt that I trimmed to the proper width. Not necessarily pretty, but it's hidden behind the case anyhow. If I recall, I had the belt on hand but it came from Wal-Mart or Sears or something like that. It was not a fancy belt.

Good luck, Alex
