Speaker *sounds* blown but isn't....or so I think
1/1/2007 12:15:04 AMSteve H
All,
Making forward progress on my Stewart Warner 11-6V. This evening I played some records on it while it was still on the bench, and the speaker sounded as if it were blown; even at moderate levels any bass would sound like it were coming out of a cone that had a 3 year old child poking holes in it. However, the speaker looks to be in damn near perfect shape. See for yourself:

I took some bias readings off of the output tube and rectifier (the two tubes that I replaced), and the output tube reading was about 10-12% higher than spec. Would this have anything to do with the above issue ?

Also, here's a quick flick of the Collaro Conquest Changer in action:

Happy New Year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts ?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve H,

If you have another known good speaker, may try using clip leads and attach it to the speaker voice coil wires and listen to it. The speaker cone should move freely and not drag on the center pole of the magnet.

Thanks. I did that, and that speaker still sounded about the same. Im thinking now that perhaps my phono cartridge is bad...Is there any way to test this before I go and drop cash on a new one ?

Thanks !
Steve

Steve H,

I looked at a 11-6V1 here. It has a radio. If yours does, does the radio sound good? If it does, then the cartridge may be bad. The schematic I looked at showed a socket the phonograph plugged into. You may try inserting a signal there from a CD player or tape player and see how it sounds. Just remember it will not take too much signal there or there will be much distortion.

Sir,
Thanks for the help. Mine does have a radio; which actually sounds pretty good (hence my thought on the cartridge...). I wasn't sure about hooking up a CD player input into the phono-input; but I will surely give it a shot this evening.

Thanks again,
Steve
