Unknown cap value
12/25/2006 5:19:07 PMJim
I blew up a cap in my multimeter and I am not sure what the value is. Its green, size of an eraser head. The markings are 39ZR-07D
33

Any ideas?

Hi, Jim. I can't make sense of the markings, but maybe somebody else here can.

Is this a digital multimeter? Can you tell us where it's connected in the circuit? Is this a ceramic disc cap (circular, flat shape)? Or is it cylindrical?

Is there another cap in the meter with the same markings, that maybe could be measured?

What type and what make and model is the meter. And what mode were you in at the time you blew it?
What does the cap connect to? Is it part of the probe input? ... info like this helps to be able to even hazzard any kind of a guess.

BTW.. at the price of a good handheld DMM today.. does it even pay to try to fix the one you have?

Peter makes a very good point. But if, by chance, it's a Fluke, then absolutely it's worth fixing - although you probably can't afford to pay Fluke to fix it.

Peter's question about the mode the meter was in when the cap blew is relevant - might tell us what ckt it's in.

Its a good micronta analog range doubler meter I have that I use for measuring things that DMM's get hung up on, ie volume pot motion. It looks like a ceramic disc cap and is the only one in the unit.

Jim,
I have a vintage Micronta Range Doubler Analog meter. 22-204U, which I assume to be a model number, is printed just under the word Micronta on the meter face. Maybe 15-20 years old. Describe the general location of the component, and I'll open mine and have a look-see.

I see Marv got in before I could, I'm slow. But, Radio Shack...what's the catalog number? You could check with them for a manual. I haven't been on their site for awhile. They may even have downloads. I have a 22-210 but it has more than one cap. Your's is probably a DC blocking capacitor.

Thanks everyone. I found a cap laying around in a pile of stuff I had, looked like the blown cap, said 33 on the side just like the old one. Put it in and it works fine. My 10k scale would go to zero ohms when put on that scale. I think I was in ohms and accidently touch some voltage. Really smoked up the circuit board. Thanks again.
