Differences between schematic and actual parts
12/14/2006 10:16:25 PMRandy(45285:0)
I have an original Zenith g8005 T.O. and the schematic parts list does not match the actual original parts for voltages. The voltages on the actual caps are higher, usually 400, vs. the parts list at 200vdc. There are half a dozen like this. The line schematic only lists the value, not the voltage rating. Should I be ok with the lower 200vdc ratings.

Hi Randy
well, even though the schematic calls for 200vdc, I would replace the ones that are in there with 400vdc, the rule usually is equal or higher working voltage, just too be safe I would use 400vdc.

Ok, I found a major problem. My original chassis is stamped 8g005yt(like the schematic). If you use the schematic for that chassis number its wrong, it used the z3 rectifier and mine uses the Z6. Here is the wrong schematic:
http://www.transoceanic.nostalgiaair.org/8g005/8g005z1.pdf
It matches the older schematic:
http://www.transoceanic.nostalgiaair.org/8g005/8g005.pdf
Only problem is there is no parts list on this older schematic.

What is the model # of Randy's radio, I noticed he has the chassis # I don't see a Model 421 under Zenith on nostalgia air?

Hi Carl
Ok, I found that schematic on the Schematic Bank as well, I still however don't know which capacitors he is refering too, if it is the multisection cap, according to the schematic I found they are rated at 150vdc.

Carl, that schematic is wrong even though it says 8C40 chassis and has the 117Z6 tube, its just wrong. And example of a component difference is coming off of pin 6 of the 1Ld5. The main schematic you pulled off of the nostalgia air listing says the cap is a .0005. Now look at this secret schematic on this site of the same chassis.
http://www.transoceanic.nostalgiaair.org/8g005/8g005.pdf
Same chassis but look at the cap, it's a .004 which is correct and the rectifier tube is correct too.

Hi Randy
As far as which schematic is right, do you know of the other source I metioned before The Schematic Bank, its a free site with a much larger data base for schematics than Nostalgia Air, you will find the schematic for your radio there, or if you like I can save the file and E Mail it too you, then you can look it over and see if the parts list agrees with your actual radio.

Hi Mark,
The Beitman schematic on The Schematic Bank shows the same .0005 capacitor in the location that Randy referred to also.
Just how many versions of the 8G005 exist?
Carl

Hi Carl
Good question, but I see his delema, those pdf's he refered too do indeed have a .004uf, but the parts lists that are shown call out for the .0005uf, as far as how many versions who knows, alot of times changes were not always documented, in a situation like this, without any other versions found, I would just replace part for part, value for value as per the original chassis has in it, really thats the only thing you can do.

Hi Randy
I now see your delma, as I stated to carl, alot of the time changes went undocumented, about the only thing you can do in a situation like this, unless you find a version with the parts list too match the schematic or actual chassis your working with, is just replace part for part/value for value as per the chassis your working on.

I have found that the Sams Photo facts have been very acurate until now. One problem that I have noticed over the years of restoring radios is that Zenith is bad about adding parts or using stuff laying around. I have actually made Zenith work better by removing stuff that was not on the schematic. About half of the capacitors in my T.O do not match the parts list. Thanks for all of your hard work and time trying to figure out this problem.
