Atwater Metal case finish

What was the original finish on a 1920's metal case radio. I have noticed that alot of older equipment had a hard wrinkle type finish, mostly in Browns and greys.

Hi Dave
I have a 1929 Atwater Kent Model 55C Floor console and the pattern to me looks like the old wood grain pattern that Ford used to put in the 1970's model cars as accent trim.

The finishes I'am talking about were used on things like Film projectors, Phonographs, tube testers, things like that. Dont think Ford would have used such quality finishes. hehe.

Hi Dave
Sorry I guess I didn't understand what you were asking the items your talking about would have have the type of finish you stated earlier and some of the Atwater Kent Metal cabinets did have the type I described earlier, but not all of them.

Good question: I have an old metal case Deforest that looked dark brown or grey. However, I read somewhere that if you clean the outer case with Hand Cleaner, (the kind that you buy for automotive, without grit in it). just pure cream. You can learn the origional color if there is left on the cabinet. I did that and was suprised to see that the origional color was actually a gold flake pattern. I have put that radio away for now until I learn how to deal with that kind of painting. Lets hope someone can help us.
