Fairbanks Morse model 40

Just finished re-capping a Fairbanks Morse model 40. Checked all resisters and all tubes check fine. I get very pronounced squeling on stations except where our local clear channel station broadcasts at about a zillion watts. When I touch the cap lead from one of the 6C6 tubes, reception is better, when I touch the other, I get much distortion. I am guessing it needs alignment but I have not learned that process yet. Any suggestions before I bother someone to teach me radio alignment?
Many thanks,
Jon.

Jon,

This radio uses regeneration to boost the sensitivity of the radio. Complete alignment would be strongly recommended. First try backing out (CCW) of the regeneration control C8 as shown on the pictorial. You may be getting too much positive feedback. According to the alignment instructions back out the control until the oscillation (squealing) stops, then back off another 1/4 turn.

Richard,
Thanks for the advice, I should have paid more attention to the schematic. It helped a little but it is obvious that it will need an alignment.
Jon.
