Does anyone know who sells vintage paper speaker cones? I thought I saw a place on the internet years ago that sold the paper cones and told how to go about installing them.

Do a search on Speaker Cones. There have been discussions recently with cones selling for less than a dollar. Might search forums on antiqueradios.com .

How come the voice coil wires always go thru the paper cone. How do I get this connection if I am re-coning or should I just cut around this part.

James:
If the center part of the old speaker is good I just cut a circle aroud it all (includes the part where the wirrs are attached to the old paper)about a 1/2 dollar size. The I cut the new speaker a bit smaller and overlay it on the old one and glue them together. (I use "Sobo" fabric cement avaiable in any craft or fabric store but Elmers whit glue works fine too) Then I position and gule the outside edge being careful to keep the center aligned so the voice coil doesn't get pulled off center and rub.
Works great. Take look.

Why do the VC wires attach to the paper cone? Is there a functional reason for this.

Mechanical support.

Wires from the voice coil coming from the _top_ of the voice coil will run about 10mm on the cone surface, be glued to the cone then soldered to small rivets. The "flexible" wiring will then be soldered under the paper cone. That way, if for some reasons you pull on the wire, the voice coil will have less chances to get damaged.

On some older speakers, the voice coil wiring is directly attached to the speaker wires then to end connectors or soldering tabs.
