Leader LOB0-501 Scope
12/3/2006 7:06:10 PMGary G
I just acuired this scope, but it didn't come with the manual or a set of probes. I can probably work the scope without the manual, but certainly not without a set of probes.

Can someone suggest what set of probes I need to get, or if someone has an extra set that they can part with that will work with the scope, I would be grateful. If someone also has a copy of the manual, that would also be great. Thanks !

I should have proof read a little better. The scope is an LBO-501. Sorry about that !

:Gary,

The manual for that scope is available from A.G.Tannenbaum Co. for $20. You can order it online at http://www.agtannenbaum.com/l_cat.html#LEADER

I've purchased from them before and they are reputable.

Thanks Dennis for the heads up on the manual. Does anyone know what set of probes I would need? Thanks.

:Gary,

I own 3 probes.

- RF probe (used the most) I signal trace with this one (even use it with my signal tracer as well as scope)

- De-modulator probe (mostly used when I was working on TV's as a hobby)

- Direct 1x - 10x switchable probe.

For the ABC's of probes go to http://128.252.35.98/321/Pdf/abcProbes.pdf
There is a pdf format document there that you can print if you like....explains different probes in depth. This is pretty heavy reading but good stuff to know.

or.........

go to http://bama.sbc.edu/

Don't know if you are familiar with BAMA but you can download the manuals for various test equipment there. (If you don't already have it you'll need to download their DJVU viewer first to see the files (it's on their front page). Once you do that go to the HEATH page and print out the manuals for these 3 probes.....

309C R.F. Probe
337C Demodulator Probe
342 Low Capacity Probe

These are only 4 or 5 pages each but each one can teach you a lot about probes

Good luck.......and oh.....you can buy probes on the net from many places........shop around...prices vary widely. I recently bought my 1x-10x switchable probe from www.elenco.com

Dennis

Dennis, thanks for the additional information. Since the scope I have has only 5 mhz bandwidth, can I use a probe that is e.g. 100 mhz? It doesn't look like 5mhz probes are available. Many thanks again for the information.

Gary,

From what I have read (I am by no means an "expert" on scopes and probes - not by a lonnnnnnnng shot....I only learn from what I read and from experimenting)a "general rule" is that a probe should MEET or EXCEED the bandwidth capabilities of the scope. I think it would be tough to locate a modern 5Mhz probe but you might be able to find one for your scope on ebay ( a used one). Sounds like you might have a vintage Eico scope or equivalent.

I am curious if you plan to use your scope in troubleshooting tube radios ? It is just my opinion but I think this would be a case of overkill. Although scopes are a wonderful tool - and some guys swear by them - I think most hobbyists rely much more on their VTVM or Multimeter and signal tracer. I am sure that there will be folks who differ with this opinion but I think a lot will agree with it.

I used my scope much more frequently when working on TV's to do alignments on them. And...even though I do not use mine on radios I have an interest in learning HOW to use it effectively and how to understand it's operation. A good way to do this is to monitor and make note of the signal as it passes through the various stages of a correctly functioning radio. I guess the bottom line is I would like to be proficient enough in the use of my scope to use it regularly on radios but I feel much more comfortable with the other test equipment....... ie: signal generator, VTVM / Multimeter & signal tracer.
