I have finally got this radio performing satisfactory except for a loud screach when I turn the radio on. It is happening while the tubes are warming up....A loud screach and then it disappears and everything is ok....any obvious solutions??

Well, sounds to me like a charge up of a capacitor, I would check all connections, make sure there is not a reversed connection on an electroylytic somewhere, or possibly a defective one.
