Zenith H725 caps

I've just recapped a Zenith H725. I replaced all of the paper caps, then turned the set on to test it out. It sounded fine. After I replaced all four electrolytics, the set had so much bass response that it distorted the treble and sounded garbled. I can only get a clean sound with the volume control turned almost all the way down.

The set originally had one 80 mfd cap and three 40 mfd electrolytics. These were replaced with one 100 mfd @ 160V and three 47 mfd @ 160V caps. Can someone please explain what could he going on?

Thanks again,
Larry Rickard

Hi Larry

New capacitors on the B+ line should not have caused the problem. Could an electrolytic cap be connected to a signal line? The output transformer has a tap. Is the electrolytic connected to the proper terminal?

You could reduce the value of coupling caps which will cut back on bass. Your radio has a .02 mfd to the grid of the output. It could be reduced to .005 mfd or less.
