Power up protection
12/2/2006 8:30:00 AMBob H
My first real restoration project is a 16 tube Airline 62-197.From some aspects the large separate
AF and RF chassis are easier to work on. Tubes are
(4)6K7 (3) 76-6B7 -6F7-(4)2A3-45-(2) 5Z3. As these
tubes are a considerable investment What is the best
way to protect them when I power up? Electrolytics
have been changed and some of the paper caps. Tested for shorts as best I know how. I do have a variac.
Thank You

Hi Bob

Good that you replsced electrolytic and other leaky paper caps.

You might want to fuse the radio? Most radios didn't come fused. There are Thermistors available that bring power up slowly. A popular one is CL-90 by GE.

Tubes are available at reasonable prices. Although they will probably last for decades might want to watch flea markets for an extra set?

: Thanks-did not know about the thermistors.Can
bring power up slowly with the variac but adding
the CL-90 should help preserve the unit if I can get it going.
