No sound but all tubes light up.
11/30/2006 10:31:19 PMJesse E Hancock
I have just recapped and replaced the 50c5 tube on My project (First)Radio Motorola A9b. After doing all of this, I put the radio back together and proceded to turn it on. I noticed that the tubes light up, but there's no sound coming from the speaker. The Wound Antenna in the radio's back is re soldered. All is connected exactly the way I found it.
But the only thing I guessed on was, the exact way the antenna connects to the tuning capicator. In the Schematic actual photo there's a Wire on the right side of the tuning capacitor which is up top in one of the rings that sit above the moving plates. Could it be that the radio works, but could be reciving no station? Again all tubes are lit, but no sound.. Help?

I will add upon further investigation I discovered that if you put your ear very close to speaker that you can hear a very light hum, and you can hear the tuner finding a station but its extremely distorted.
Damn , Im stumped.

Hi Jesse

Measure tube plate & screen voltages. Can us hear the slight hum change as you adjust volume? Does touching center terminal on the volume control cause hum?

Hi Jesse
I can not find a schematic for this model, so could you tell me where the other lead of the antenna is supposed to be connected according your schematic, and if so, is it connected to the proper point, also does this unit have an oscillator trimmer, its possible that the oscillator is off frequency or not functioning properly.

Well, I will admit reading schematics is not my forte!
But I did by luck , from Bill from Va come across a close enough schematic that shows in a picture of the circuit board completely assembled one wire coming from the right side of the tuning capcitor. Now Im not sure that this is proper, because when I first opened up the radio the wires to the antenna were not connected, the 50c5 was missing, and this radio has not worked in years... It was a gift to me when a friend was moving. I do need help. Its my first radio , so its a doosey. Now I will e mail you what I have for some help if you will? or Anyone? Let me know... Jesse

Jesse, just in case the antenna is hooked up wrong. A green wire, most always, from the antenna connects to the tuning capacitor. You then should follow that connection to pin 7 of the 12BE6. The other lead from the antenna should trace to the oscillator coil.

Didos's Bill
Also though I have found that there is also a wire from the osc trimmer on the tunning condensor too the osc coil as well.

Bill,
You are Awesome!!!!!!!!!! I thank you so much for reminding me to look at the schematic you sent me. But One thing I dont follow, I think someone had opened this radio way before I ever recieved it.. It sounds like there should be two wires coming off the two gang tuning cap, is this true? If not thats cool, But I am learning, I am learning the names of the parts, but you say green goes to tuning cap, then trace from there to pin 7 these wires arent long enough for that..
Now I must say I soldered on to what was already there, as extending the wires somewhat, I just wonder If I have miswired something. (Note) I know because tubes heat and light isnt a big deal , but boy that got me excited. Sorry to be a bother but I would love to get this one working, then get the hum out of the zenith my wife bought me the other day.. I know its coming from a cap, and it has a metal chassis, it almost looks like a better radio just from the build.

This radio is a more modern circuit board, right? Motorola liked to use DOUBLE sided circuit boards, check where you soldered in the caps and make sure you got a good connection on both sides of that board. I had a similr problem with a Motorola clock radio. Just a thought.

That's also a good thought. I really want this radio to work. I will check that. But Im pretty sure that I have a good connection, although,I noticed that when I was re-soldering the new caps in place in one of the holes in the board, since I didnt replace with Can type
that some of the printed circuit was ripping up and away from the board.
