MY RADIO HAS BEEN RESTORED. BUT I CAN'T GET THE VOLUME DOWN SOFT. IS THIER SOMETHING WRONG, OR IS THIS WHAT I SHOULD EXPECT. THE PERSON THAT SOLD ME THE RADIO, SAID THE RADIO STATIONS ARE STRONGER TODAY.

Yes Allan, I think there IS something wrong. The person who "restored" your radio could possibly have made a wiring error. You should be able to set your volume from a loud sound down to inaudible using the volume control. And....radio stations were also quite "powerful" way back when.

Regards,

Dennis.

Allen, can you give us the model number of this set?

Hi Allen

Like others said, model number will help. Most radios have a volume control between the signal and ground. This type of circuit should allow a radio to be turned all the way down.

Some battery operated radios have a resistor in series with low side of the control to ground. This prevents a radio from being turned all the way down. Idea being a person will still hear stations and turn the radio off rather than down, saving battery life.

Can your radio be operated off batteries?

Hi Norm,
Model no.is 5T8. This model has a phono hook-up. So I used the connection on the back to attach a CD Player. Put a toggle switch on the back to switch from radio to CD or tape. this is so I don't have to replug.
I bought a Pilot FM Tuner, the volume is loud and clear, but I can't get it soft. AM is the same on some stations.

Hi Allen

Here is the schematic of your radio:

http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/027/M0015027.pdf

The low side of your volume control doesn't connect to ground. It goes to cap C27, .25 mf, and a 100K resistor. If this cap is missing or bad you won't be able to turn volume down. For a test directly ground volume control terminal that goes to this resistor and cap.

Best to use shielded wire for an added CD player input. Other wire might pick up hum or even unwanted radio signals.
