Transistorized Atwater Kent 20 & RCA Radiola 17

Transistorized Radio - I just purchased 2 radios (AK 20 & RCA Radiola 17) at an auction that has some 4 pin tube bases in them with transistors. I would appreciate the circuit spec's for making transistorized tubes so that I can finish the job and make these radio's play.

Thanks for any help,

Mike Landon

Michael: Sometimes I run across a recifier tube that's been replaced with a socket and a couple of diodes. Could this be what you're seeing? Those don't require any changes to the radio's basic circuitry (although they can be hard on the other tubes because of the hard start).

Tubes for both the AK20 and the Radiola 17 are readily available, so why not just use tubes?

Finally - the tube base is fitted with a 2N3819 transitor, .001uf cap, 1K and 1M ohm resistor, and said to be powered by a 9 - 20 VDC power source. This would negate the approx $150 power supply for a radio. I have a couple of power supplied but many DC radios.

There were a couple of different transistorized tube bases made for use in older radios. Try a web search and you should be able to come up with something.
