Eye Tube for RT-400
11/12/2006 12:12:02 AMGary
I recently acquired a Philco Custom Stereophonic RT-400 tuner (s/n 05073) taken from a console unit. It's fabulous, but is missing the eye tube. I tried a NOS GE 6FG6/ EM-84, but it doesn't project the "magic eye" function (but seems to glow in all other respects). Furthermore, the orientation of the "screen" is completely reversed, that is, the white panel on the side of the tube faces the rear of the unit when mounted. Obviously, this is the wrong tube. The schematic on the back of the faceplate indicates all tubes except for the eye tube... ANY IDEAS ON WHICH EYETUBE TO USE? The socket is 9 pin.

Hi Gary

The schematic is in Beitmans (1960) and shows 6DA5 as the tuning indicator. That can be accessed on this site.

Thanks Ken,

That site looks like a great resource (as is this one!).

Gary, I have a 6DU6/EM85 eye tube and the eye faces the space between the 1 and 9 pin. That may be another possible replacement. PL

Thanks - but that would be a little off... the space between my 1 and 9 pin spans a "6-9 o'clock" position when facing the front of the receiver. I would like a projection at the "6 o'clock" position (am or pm - I'm working with a 12 hour clock!) - I guess that would be one that points from the 9 pin. Thanks for your offer, though.

Gary,

Some subs for the 6DA5 are: 6BR5, 65ME, EM80 and EM81.

Thanks, I'll check into that link. I have an old McGee amp that needs some replacement tubes as well...

Funny, I only paid $36 for this prestine, and otherwise fully functional Philco receiver - but I'm willing to spend a third of that amount to make it look pretty when tuned in to NPR!

I appreciate all of your help, and it's nice to know this forum has such knowledgeable members to answer any questions I may have. Cheers.

Speaking of eye tubes here's a neat link.
