oscillator coil replacement
7/14/1998 12:17:30 PMRichard Ehrman
I have an Emerson portable radio model 568A that has an open oscillator coil. Even if I were to get the part number from the Sam's, I am afraid the part would no longer be available. Are there any suggestions on how/where I might be able to obtain a replacement coil? Both primary & secondary are open so there is no way of getting any readings from the old coil.
Thanks

Hi Richard

If your oscillator coil is only used for the broadcast band there are universal replacements available. These coils have a center slug allowing them to be adjusted for different radios. One source for universal replacement coils is Antique Electronic Supply. Norm

Norm, thanks for the quick response. One important fact I did not mention (wanted to get a Sam's first) was that besides the pri & sec windings there is a tertiary winding with only one end used. The tertiary goes to the 1st grid of the 1R5 while the secondary goes to grids 2/4. I imagine I could order the universal coil from AES but I'll probably have to experiment and try to wind my own tertiary winding. There was no pt. no. of the coil in Sam's........Thanks

You might be able to use a small 50pf cap in place of the winding. A one ended coil is really no more than a cap. Some instructions come with the universal coils showing different circuits.

A slight technical note: Grids 2& 4 of the 1R5 go to the primary of the oscilator transformer, the secondary has a variable capacitator across it and a small capacitator between the hot end oand grid 1.

I realize this is an old problem, but I only just discovered the site, and therefore the question.
Some while ago I re-built an oscillator coil for an Emerson DM331. Maybe there would be some similarity.
I'd be happy to send you the details.
