RCA 67V1 phono

Forum,
The mechanism has been cleaned of all the residual grease (some of it hardened) using mineral spirits. The next step is re-assembly, and I'm thinking White Lithium grease, and maybe simple 3 n 1 oil in places of close tolerances. Any comments??

Marv, unless there is some special lube used by those who restore phonos, I stay with the 3in1. I tried grease on a turn table one time and it was enough drag to slow down the turn table, had to take it apart and remove the grease. PL

PL,
Thanks for the input. There were a couple sliding mechanisms that had some sort of grease on them before cleaning, but that doesn't mean they need new grease. I'll try testing with light lube (3 n 1) before I go to the heavy stuff. Don't have any white Lithium stuff anyway.

Marv, whatever grease you use must be very thin, I don't know if thats the correct discription but any drag, even from the grease is enough to slow down the turntable. I'm wondering if some type of graphite might work better. PL

I have seem white lithium grease in a spray form . This is lighter than the grease you get in a can. It may be a good solution.

I think graphite would be a good choice. For one it DOESN'T attract dirt. Might be a little messy, all depends on what you are lubing. Motor shafts would probly be better off with the 3n'1.

Jeremy,
I'm thinking maybe all three types of lube. The lithium being of a stiffer consistency, would tend to cling to the horizontal/sliding members, but would be sufficiently compliant to avoid excess loading of the mechanism. Areas that might be exposed or tend to collect dirt and grime might be better served by powdered graphite, and the sliding record loader plate has been re-assembled using it. The platter shaft and bearings are well isolated and not so susceptible to dirt and debris, so the 3 n 1 oil might be a good choice.
