Grill Cloth for 1948 radio
10/14/2006 12:24:57 PMBill G.
Does anyone know a good source for grill cloth of this vintage. It is for a Zenith 8H832. The sources I know seem to cut off at 1940.

All the Best,

Bill G.

Have you tried www.tubesandmore.com? If not, item number S-G967F might be what you're looking for.

Hi Brian,
Thank you for the help. I have looked over the selection at AES, and they seem to have a wide selection of pre-1940, but nothing as recent as 1948. Some of the electric guitar grill cloths come close.

All the Best,

Bill

I have had great luck at my local "RagShop" cloth store.
Where they sell cloth by the yard.
I find remnants at great prices... I only look for fbric the looks like or looks like it would be of the 30s-40 era grill cloth.
Great prices.
Just recently I saw "grill cloth" on Ebay for what was about $10 per square foot.!!!
It was a very popular 40's pattern. I stumbled on that EXACT material at my local fabric store for $3.95 a running yard!!
I also buy SOBE fabric glue there. It is a great product that I use to repair speaker paper cone tears. Drys clear and flexible and strong.

Correction:
that's SOBO fabric glue.

Bill/Peter,
Been to the popular sites recommended. but all have the same basic offering, and probably from the same mills. Got just as close to the desired mat'l for my RCA 67V1 at the local Rag Shop too, and considerably cheaper than the on-line so called grille cloth offerings of yesteryear. I noted a plethora of offerings for Zenith and Philco, but fewer for other radios. I guess those are the most popular rebuilds.

Hi Marv,
This radio is a Zenith, hoever, because of its age and extreme rarity there isn't much call for its grill cloth.
Unlike coin or stamp collecting, in vintage radios rare is not always good. The Zenith cubes, 5S127, and 6S229 are common, but collectors love them. It seems a little odd. As a result repair parts are easier to find for those models.

All the Best,

Bill

Thank you for the tip. They were my second stop after AES. I also tried Radio Daz. I will try the local rag shop and see what I can find. I decided not to go for the guitar amp grill cloth. The match isn't quite close enough.

All the Best,

Bill
