I'm still struggling to get the hum out. Set has been recapped and swapping out the 50L6 or 35Z5 had no effect. The hum decreases as the volume is set to a higher level (in between stations). It's not loud, but loud enough to hear when listening at a low volume level. Any suggestions?

Are caps connected to the same ground point as they were originally? Sometimes using a point only a short distance away can cause hum. Since hum is louder with volume turned down has the volume control ground been moved? You might try connecting it to different places. Maybe a wire direct from volume control to negative of the filter caps would reduce hum?
