need help on tube i.d.

just got a guild spice chest, tested the tubes and found some bad, antique electronics lists an all american 5 tube set as follows, 12SA7, 12SK7, 12SQ7, 35Z5GT, 50L6GT, BUT A FRIEND OF MINE SAID THAT THE SPICE LINE UP WAS THE AMERICAN 5 AND THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS 12AV6 or 12AT6, 12BA6, 12BE6, 30W4, 50C5, are these replacements for the spice chest listings? or do i have the wrong info on the american five set as i was told? any help will be appreciated as i am new at this radio repair stuff

Hi Joe

Both are right the first tubes 12SA7, 12SK7 etc. are octal and were used in the 1940's. The 2nd set, 12AV6, 12BA6 etc. were the more modern 7 pin tubes used in the 1950's. Both groups have been called All American Five. It's best to look in your radio to see what tubes are used. There are other variations such as 35L6GT & 35C5.
