Jukebox Memories

In the mid-50s, most jukeboxes played 78s. There was a place on the edge of town that rented and serviced jukeboxes in bars, teen hangouts, etc. - including, of course, replacing records with the latest hits.

Anyway, this was the place to go to buy used 78 records on the cheap. Since they had been played on jukebox record changers, there were no scratches. However, the really big hits were almost white in color they had been played so many times.

I have this vivid recollection, which may be in error, of buying "Mule Train" on a used 78 record.

I can't remember their price of used 78s, but it might have been a dime or so.

Doug.
Don't remember 78's in the 50's, but mostly 45's. Got a stack (over 100) 78's I can't play on my cheap little turntable. Even have 3 complete 78 albums of movie sound tracks that look almost unplayed. Also got a stack of 45's and 33's. Have many "Not for Resale" 45's all with white labels, but otherwise black. Over 300 total removed from my boyhood home after all had passed. Some with original envelopes, and some without, but all have that musty, old odor of damp indoor storage. Wonder if that old odor makes them worth more or less?
