atwater - kent model 70 tube question
9/4/2006 4:27:19 PMjoe l
hello everyone
new to tube radios and tube amplifiers in general
i have an atwater - kent model 70 with one broken tube (one of the 4 pin 80's) and one missing tube
in the spot where the tube is missing is 5 pin holes and it says 'speaker'
i have tried looking over the schematics provided on the website but cant seem to find tube names
can anyone help me get this nice old radio up and running?
thanks
joe

Hi, Joe. Here's the schematic info, 24 pages worth: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel/454/M0001454.pdf

There were several different AK 70 chassis, but yours will be an AC version with a rectifier tube. The 80 tube is the rectifier - I suggest buying a used one from AES or RadioDaze. Check the filaments on all the other tubes with an ohmeter.

All the tubes in this set are reasonably priced for used ones, except the two 45 final audio tubes in push-pull. Hopefully, yours are OK.

The 5-pin socket labeled "speaker" is to plug in a speaker. I'm not sure what model AK speaker would have been prescribed for this set.

wow, thank you so much for the prompt response
i really appreciate it
soon after i wrote that i discovered that the speaker was infact unplugged and that its 5 prongs had a strange resemblance to the 5 pin holes in the socket labled 'speaker', so there you go, genius at work
anyway, two more things while i have you thinking
one is that i dont know how to check the filaments with my multimeter and the second thing is that the speaker type is 'N' however it is in pretty bad shape being torn and all, any suggestions?
thanks again
joe

The torn speaker can be patched with a little rubber cement and some paper, like coffee filters are make of. Chances are your speaker will work OK while you troubleshoot your radio. You can come back to the speaker later.

You can link on the "Tubes" section of this website to get base diagrams of tubes. Tube pins are numbered clockwise, looking at the tube from its bottom, with the pins pointed toward you, starting at the index. For garden-variety 4-pin pre-octals, like your two 45s, the filament is on the two larger pins. You should measure just a few ohms if the filament is good, infinite if it's burned out.

You're also going to need to check the audio interstage transformers with an ohmmeter to make sure the primary and secondary windings are not open.

This set is a good player, and there can't be anything wrong with it that can't be fixed relatively simply. Go slowly, and keep good notes of what you do. If this is your first set to restore, plan on spending several weeks and take just one step at a time - don't try to work on too many sections of the set at once.

Joe, thank you for recognizing me as a genius. So many people, including my wife, have failed to recognize this!

Anyway, when you said the empty socket was labeled "speaker," I suspected it might be for the speaker. Just a lucky guess ;>)
