Home made capacitor fun... to impress girls? ..lol

Just a little fun...
I was showing my upstairs neighbor (female engineer) a few pointers on basic rebuilding of old radios as I worked on one on my bench.
I was showing her how a capacitor works and explaining how it's made and so on...well I decided to demonstrate as we spoke.
I had an AA5 radio open there anyway... so... I made a little homemade capacitor for fun to demonstrate.

This radio uses a .002uf cap from the volume control wiper to the 12sq7 grid.

So I disconnected it....

Then I ripped off a sheet of aluminum foil, opened up a book and slipped it in between the pages then I took a second piece and put it on the next page... separated by one sheet of paper.
Put a clip lead to each piece of foil and connected it into the radio in place of the .002 cap on tho vol control.
Wel... eureka... lol.
.. the music came snapping right back on to full briliance!!.. she was amazed.
I put my capacitance meter on it later and it read .006uf. Close eough.

Now what's the weather doing outside?... a storm?... Where's my kite and that key...lol

Impressive! Never thought about going about it that way.

Try building your own tuning and headphone bypass condensers! When you master that, build a Variocoupler and a couple of Variometers, and throw together a set. Actually, Peter, sounds like it was really an impressive display. Quick thinking. My engineering classmates at Case were similarly ignorant of the mechanics of component design. I cannot imagine how they get along out in the field, but it is apparently possible to do so.
