Andy K,
I have been looking at my Super Defiant (SX25). It looks like a person may be able to remove the main bezel by first removing the alunimum shield that the pilot lites mount on. Then turn the tuning gang to max capacity and mark the tuning capacitor shaft and the hub (part that has the set screws)on the scale so they can be aligned again later and sliding the scale back on the shaft out of the way. May have enough room to remove the bezel. You may want to look at yours and study it to see if there could be enough room made for removal. Otherwise I would assume the case would have to be dissambled. Perhaps there are others who have done this or taken the case apart or who have done what you want to. In any case I would be careful around there so not to break the dial or break one of the dial cords which look like it would be fun to restring.

Hi Andy K,
In answer to your first question, I am not him. I am pretty sure that the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply are bad and will all have to be replaced. The SX25 I have had bad electrolytics and had to be replaced along with the paper capacitors in the other stages. If there is no smell or smoke with the switch in standby position (this opens the high voltage centertap on the power transformer) and the power transformer doesn't get very hot after several minutes, then the power transformer is probably ok. There is a schematic on this site for the SX25 if you need one.

Andy K,
As I recall I had a can electrolytic that had about the correct values and voltage for the HV caps and I used a separate cap underneath for the audio tube cathode bypass. You can leave the old can mounted for looks and install new electrolytics underneath the chassis. Just be sure to isolate the old cap sections from the circuit. Perhaps using an insulated terminal strip to make the connections. You may want to check out http://www.dialcover.com/home.html He has several different multisection electrolytics that he builds.
