Crosley 148

I got this radio and it had a Magnavox speaker in it but the radio didn't work and I found the field coil open on the speaker. Where could I get another Crosley speaker?

Hi John

You can find a list of available speakers here:

Magnavox made speakers for lots of radios. It might have original in your radio?

Thanks Norm, I learned that the Magnavox in my set is original but has an open field coil (1100 ohms). Can't find another speaker. Can that field coil be wound by someone?

Yes, you can have the field rewound but it won't be cheap. Call Hank Brazeal 205-403-6243 to get an idea of price. He does good work and is listed in the AES catalog.

If you want, try carefully removing the outer paper covering on the field coil after unsoldering its lead wires....this will allow you to rotate it if it is loose.....if it isn´t loose on the pole piece, don´t force it.....use only moderate to medium pressure with your bare hands (if that gives you an approximate idea....????).

Some speaker field coil assemblies can be disassembled with screws. If your´s can, disassemble it so that you can remove the coil from the speaker. I don´t remember if the Magnavox speaker on my Crosley can be disassembled (I´m far away from home right now). I know it has a movable spider, but that doesn`t help in your case. I´m sure that different models had different variations, so your´s may have screws that hold the field coil assembly together. Keep in mind that if you disassemble this, you will have to center it later so that it doesn´t rub against the voice coil. This isn´t a difficult job, especially since the field coil doesn´t retain much magnetism, but it is something to keep in mind for later. Write down which way the field coil was assembled to the speaker, and which way its wires were connected to the set. While its orientation will not affect speaker performance, its orientation is critical for proper operation of the hum bucking coil built into the voice coil circuit of the speaker.

After you have removed the paper from the coil, you can see if the coil broke at one of the lead-in wires. According to many, and according to my own personal experience, transformers and coils often break at the lead-in wires. Repair if you can and then either re-cover with the original paper (if it wasn´t throughly destroyed), or with new paper, or with friction tape. True Value stores sell friction tape. It`s a cloth electrical tape which has good sticking qualities, and turns hard with heat and age, which will lock it into place. It´s a bit more expensive than regular electrical tape, but is well worth the price.
