Audio Taper Potentiometers - When?

When did audio taper pots become prevalent in radios?

My supposition is that it was after wire-wound pots went out, whenever that was. It would have been rather difficult to fabricate wire-wound pots with an audio taper.

Doug,
I've had a similar question about the old, noisy graphite pots, er rheostats. I created a reasonable substitute with powdered graphite from the hardware store, but since the original had gone south had no way to check the taper. My creation seems to perform well enough for my ears though. It was in a '29 Edison R7.
