Freshman Masterpiece

Hallo,

have got an Freshman Masterpiece, serial number
A114540. The schematic I found here is not matching with radio. There are some C' not in the radio ( 2x1MicroFarad in B+ Line of detector and amplifier).
Are there different versions of this radio?
It looks like all parts on there places, no desoldered wires and so on.

The Paper under the lid is also missing. Can someone help me with a good image of this Paper?

And my last Problem are the transformer, seems like they are open, the first on secondary and the second both primary and secondary). I have found a guy who can made the repair, but I dont know something about Ratio of transformer and number of turns ...

Thanks for Help Waldemar

Hi Waldemar

I'll start with the audio interstage transformers. You can buy replacements similar to Stancor A53C. AES, www.tubesandmore.com , Radio Daze, www.radiodaze.com and PTOP, www.oldradioparts.com each sell replacements. You could also use R/C coupling in place of transformers. Some gain will be lost but overall frequency response improved.

Use the schematic you found here on nostalgiaair. Some early radios didn't use a "C" battery and connect the wire to A-.

There are two major versions of the Freshman Masterpiece. You have an older version. The later version started with serial "B". You will notice a big difference in dials between the two. One has knobs, the other small window openings.

The audio interstage transformer sources were listed by Norm. These are typically 1:3 transformers (the secondary has more turns).

I wouldn't try to rewind the old ones. Replacing them with new ones is pretty simple, but you might have to use a little ingenuity to mount them where the old ones were.

If the audio transformers are replaced and the tubes light, there's a good chance that the set will take right off. These old TRFs are pretty simple and not a bad place for new people to start.

Check the grid-leak resistor - if it's drifted up to more than, say, 3-5 megohms, you can haywire a replacement resistor.

Good luck.

Hallo Doug,

thanks for your informations. Meanwhile I have checked the grid leak resistor, it is ok ( 3,1 Meg Ohm). The capacitors and tubes also tested good. I will buy 2 transformer as replacement i will use a adapter to use the old mounting holes.

I will in the future try to rewind the transformer.
I have the materials and nothing to loose. I wish to have the set running with most original parts.
I will report about that later.

Regards
Waldemar

Hi Norm,

with your information I could identify it is the older Version without "C Batterie" and with big knobs.
I will buy a replacement transformer, but will test RC coupling, while the shipment is running ( it is a long way from US to Germany and the transformer not available in germany for a good price).

In future I will try to rewind the transformer. I can use a coil winding machine and can get the material without costs. I can only win if it will be successful.

I will report when I get progress with this item.

thanks for your advices
