HIGH voltage photo flash batteries

Someone in the eBay photo equipment chat room suggested this site as a source of battery information. I'm looking for a retail source for the 500 volt (nominal) battery that was used in high voltage, fast recovery battery packs like the Vivitar HVP-1 for the Vivitar 192 or 292 strobe units. The Vivitar instruction booklet lists the Eveready E-497, Ray-O-Vac 1012, Burgess U320, and Mallory-510V (or PF497) as the manufacturer types that are suitable in the unit. Does any one know of a source? An extensive web search came up with little information.

Hi. If you live in or near a metropolitan area, you can probably find a company that can custom manufacture a battery for you. It would be a small company, maybe existing in a store front in a business district and the battery will be expensive. Just start calling numbers in the yellow pages and you will eventually find someone who does this work or knows where to point you. I've been there and done this before. Good luck. Bart

I don't believe these are made any more. The company I work for, used them for years in underwater flashes. I have seen same-size replacements with low-voltage nicad batteries and DC-DC converters.

These batteries are still being manufactured. After more
than a year of looking, off and on, I found them at
a specialty store:

http://www.photobattery.com

This store specializes in hard-to-find photo batteries.
They indicate that these batteries are also used in
radiation detectors. Price: $100 a pop.
