Admiral 10A1 chassis help

Hello, I have a 1947 admiral radio/phono combo and the speaker is ripped beyond repair. I do have a donor speaker that is the same size and it already has a transformer hooked up to it and is know to be good, the only problem is there are only 2 wires going to the speaker and the old speaker had 4 wires going to it. How do I hook up the new speaker?
Thanks
David

The extra wires are going to what is called a field coil. The field coil acts as a magnet for the speaker and filter choke for the power supply. Sometimes you can replace the field coil with a resistor (yours would be somewhere around 600 ohms) but it won't filter as good though it may be good enough. Your resistor would have to be faily high wattage, as a guess 10 watts. You could also just use the field coil portion of the old speaker. The best is if you could have the speaker reconed.

One other problem that I am having is that I can pick up all the shortwave channels, but I can not pick up any AM stations. Any Idea why this is happening?

You may have a faulty coil in the AM section (oscillator or antenna coil, perhaps?). There are places that manufacture push buttons. Not sure if they have any for your radio or not. I also forgot the name of the place that comes to mind. It's in my e-mail.

Thanks, if you remeber the name let me know. Did you have any advice on my speaker question in the first part of this forum?
Thanks

Hey, its funny, my mother in law calls me up and needs me to take stuff to the dump, so on my day off I load up the truck and take her junk to the dump, and while I am there I spot a pre WWII farnsworth radio, so I hurry up and get her junk unloaded so I can stick this console unit in the truck while no one is looking. The cabinet is completly shot, but the speaker is perfect. I got a great chassis and knobs, a phonoghraph and the speaker that I want to use in the Admiral. I guess it was dumb luck or fate.

Pretty awesome. Sometimes those ratty cabinets can be restored, too. ...But then, I don't want to make another project for you.

Regarding the speaker, if you can't find an identical speaker with a similar resistance field coil, you can re-cone your original one or have it reconed by someone else. ...Or you can take a permanent magnet speaker and mount the old output transformer to this. Substitute a 10 to 15 watt wire wound resistor for the field coil. The resistor must be close to the field coil's resistance. You can also cut away the frame from the field coil and simply mount this in an inconspicuous place....which allows you to keep using it. I strongly recommend re-coning the original speaker or replacing it with a similar type, though. Modern PM speakers don't look right, and having a field coil lingering around in back of the radio looks kind of dumb (though it does the trick if needed).
