Hi I have a hallicrafters model S 38 and it has been playine fine untill it stoped it has a 35Z5GT & a 50L6GT tubes and they do not lite up
could anyone guess what may be the problem.
thanks

Check the other four tubes in the filament string, also...as per the bottom left corner of the supplied schematic reference...also your power switch....... So if the sets its bwoken...... you need to fix it.

Check all the tube filaments with an ohmeter. check the power switch for continuity. Check continuity from the prongs on the power cord plug to where they attatch inside the radio. Make sure you DO NOT have the radio plugged in when you do these basic tests.

Hi David, I would bet the 35Z5 tube filament has opened up. It could be any one of the tubes in the string but I would start with that one.

:::thanks greg i replsced the35Z5 and that did not help somthing i do not understand about the wiring
i have 110 voltgage going into one pin and a wire going from that pin to the on & off switch and at that end at the switch i do not have any power i turned the switch several times and one the switch on and the dial light flickered just a 1/2 second but if i am not getting any power to the switch i dont know if it is the problem any more ideas
thanks

Hi David,

If the filament of the 35Z5 is burned out (using a voltohm meter and looking at the bottom of the tube with the index key facing you count from the left of the index pin clockwise) measure between pins 2 and 7 then between pins 2 and 3. There should be continuity. If there is no continuity between pins 2 and 3 I would test the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply circuit and any other capacitors that may be attached to pin 6 or 8 of the 35Z5 for shorts or excessive leakage.

David,

That should be capacitors hooked to pin 5 instead of pin 6 in my previous post.

David,

Remember the tubes in the set are in series (kind of like a cheap set of Christmas lights) and if any one of the tubes' filaments burn out then none of the tubes will light. If you have a voltohm meter or can borrow one you can check the filaments of the tubes for continuity. With the tube pins facing you, start at the index pin and count the pins from left in a clockwise direction, pin 1, 2, 3, etc. On the 12SK7 tubes the filament is pins 2 and 7. On the 12SQ7s the filament is pins 7 and 8. On the 35L6 the filament is pins 2 and 7 with a lamp tap at pin 3. On the 35Z5 you should have continuity on pins 2 and 7, 2 and 3, and 3 and 7. Something else to check in continuity of the line cord. Also continuity across the on/off switch. I recently was checking a Heathkit T3 signal tracer that wouldn't come on. The on/off switch made a nice click when turning on but was found not to be making continuity across it. A good cleaning of the switch and the T3 would come on then.

David,

It was one of those moments. Disregard about pin 3 lamp tap in reference to the 35L6 tube in my previous post.
