Old radio consoles

I found two old radio consoles but can't find the diagrams for either. One is a Radiola AR596 and looks like it says Model 46. The other one is a Majestic 7, Model 70. I don't see diagrams listed for either set. They are probably in the list somewhere but where do I look? Any Help?

John,
Grigsby-Grunow made a Majestic (I have a 90B from 1929), and I think you'll find the Grigsby-Grunow listed, but not the Majestic. Just a clue.

Thanks Marv, I found mine under the Grigsby-Grunow Model 70B. Does yours work? I think mine is similar, has four 226's, one 227 and two 171A's.

John,
Your tube line-up is the same, except mine uses 2 45's vs 171A's in pure push-pull config for the output. It works fine after my restoration. Tested and recapped as needed. Clawed a lot of pitch out of a condenser can, and replaced with modern equivalents, then back into the can sans pitch. Had to create a special rig to rewind the field coil with 15000 ft of #32AWG. Still sits in the unrestored cabinet awaiting an anxious buyer.

I love those old receivers! They're great! I own a Majestic 180. It's SUPER heavy. The cabinets of pre-depression era radios are made well. The power supply could hold a boat still all by itself. I can't wait to restore my cabinet. It has beautiful veneers. I hate the phonograph, though. It's a piece of junk. The magnetic cartridge might as well be a drill.

The speaker on your's, if it's at all like mine (which it most likely is), can be restored to beautiful tone reproduction by replacing the outer edge. The original edge is made of rubber impregnated cloth. If you can find new material of this type, congratulations. I have successfully used suede. I suppose you could also use thin leather, or for a non-organic, non-humidity affected material, you could use thin "pleather". Upon replacement the speaker will vibrate beautifully to all of those deep bass notes. When I first got my 180 going, I used 171 tubes (I didn't have the original power supply, and built a much lower powered one). They put out quite a bit of power. They certainly don't put out what 45s or 50s put out, but they're quite acceptable. The circuitry in your radio is almost identical to mine. If you're wondering what the right hand knob is for, this is the antenna trimmer. As you tune over the dial, you must re-adjust this for maximum sensitivity.

Carl,
The Majestic is probably listed under Grigsby-Grunow as noted earlier in my posting to John.

The Majestic 70 uses a small (7 inch or so) speaker with a cloth or paper edge suspension, unlike the "Coloratura" speakers used in your later sets, and it uses a pair of UX-171-A's in push pull. The output tubes are mounted right on the main chassis, not in the power pack, so you will have leittle work to do once you foind the correct power supply.
