Zenith 7 pin tube socket.....
3/13/2006 8:27:45 PMMILTON
Hi, I am repairing a Zenith H520T, which has missed the 50C5 socket.
This problem probably would not be much if this socket were like the common ones with his mounting centers at 7/8, the socket I need is with 1” 5/16 centers and it is not available at AES.
If some body have a good used one and want to sell it just email me.
I can pay by Paypal.
Thanks

Milton, if the only problem is the dimension between mounting bolts/rivits, can you just redrill the mounting holes?

Hi Milton,

I remember seeing this at times in the past. If I understand you, there is a large hole in the chassis like where an octal socket would be mounted except the radio uses a miniature tube. I guess in the radio production it was decided to use a 7 pin miniature instead of an 8 pin tube. What I used to do was make an adapter. I would decide on what 7 pin socket to use and using a piece of aluminum plate punch a hole for the new 7 pin socket with a hole punch. Placing this over the large hole and centering it I would mark from underneath the chassis with a pen or pencil the diameter of the hole and the location of the original mounting holes onto the aluminum plate. A little freehand drawing and the use of tin snips would result in an adapter. The adapter could be mounted underneath the chassis using the original mounting holes. Looking from the top of the chassis no one would know the modification was not original.

That older Zenith probably was using one of the flat sockets built with two sandwiched sheets of bakelite with some of the versions having the utilization of turrets on the bottom of the socket in place of normal slotted terminals.
In that manner they were inserting all wire leads into the turret and soldering the whole mass. That way the whole tube socket did end up being a bit wider in its mounting holes.
All Electronics has a small photo here:

I will check through my surplus but may take a day since its not at this site.

BTW how did you and your loaded down 1V2 Eico scope HV supply come out ?...carbonized tube socket ????

Radiodoc:
Yes thats exactly my situation, the hole in the chassis belongs to an octal socket.
Thanks for the tip, of course I prefer to get the original part but if it can be done I follow your instructions.

Edd:
Thanks for ask, well about the EICO I decided to order from Peter Markavage AKA manualman.com
the original manual for this unit since theres no place on the web to locate it.
I ordered the 1V2 tube new from AES and checked the electrolitic capacitors (all good) so when the service manual arrives I take the neccessary info to check it and apply power to it.
Although my tube tester doesnt show internal short for the 3 1V2 tubes tested the best way to go is by replacing for a new unit.
As soon as theres something new I place here the results.
And check on your surplus I'll be waiting for it.
