GE C-525B AM-FM Volume control

I have a GE C-525B AM FM table radio that won't allow the volume to be turned down low. It plays medium to loud. The volume control is a 2meg pot that grounds through a 1k resistor. The variable tap only goes to 10 or 20k of either end of the pot's resistor strip. The caps are all ceramic disk except for a gumdrop in the convertor section. Using a jumper wire from the tap to ground didn't help. Does anyone know how to make this radio turn down to quiet?

Didn't find that schematic but most volume controls are just a divider between signal and ground. Are you sure the control has a good ground. Does grounding the grid of the 1st audio stage stop the radio?

In some portable radios they do have a resistor in series with the volume control. This prevents the radio from being turned down and instead makes a person turn it off, saving batteries.

It's possible that an open bypass cap allows signal to couple through a different path.

:Thank you for the suggestions. This is an AC-DC clock radio with a circuit board tube chassis. I have the schematic, and if you wish, I can scan/fax it for upload to your site for your files. It may be a few days before I can try your suggestions, so if I have any further questions I'll put a new post up. Bart

Hello Bart,
You said that your volume control is 2meg that connects (one side I assume) to ground through a 1K resistor.
Quick test: Jump out the 1K resistor with about 100 ohms. You can also try shorting out the 1K resistor by jumpering it.
I'd recommed that you use the 100 ohms in parallel, so that you do not forget the radio is on.
Please advise what you find... a copy of the schematic would be nice.

Good Luck,

I'll try jumping the resistor as you suggested, but I may have tried that before, I can't remember. I put this radio on the back burner for a while and then reassembled it before making my post. I'll be happy to send the schematic, but I need to know the address to send it to. I'm assuming that a simple fax is all that is required. Bart
