Restoring an A600 Zenith TO Radio

Hello friends,
recently I found an old (1958)A600 Transoceanic Zenith Radio. It was a gift that an american friend of my father gave him in the first '70. It was working at the best for some years but one bad day it ended and , though it was repaired by a technical center,it faulted again. So we decided to dismiss it. Now I would try to give it a new life . I know , it is a hard job, but I' ll try. I will start to get all the missing parts: 1)Line cord reel and original power cord. 2) Dry Z985 Battery Pack. 3)Dial Light Battery. These Items are not vital for working but I would have a complete radio as it was at the beginning. The second step will be harder 'cause my radio is dead (doesn't turn on)so, I guess I should try to find a good engineer to fix the problem unless somebody of you here would help me to do it.I've already found schemas and manuals, if needed. May I count on your help? Thanks a lot in advance. Bye. Mauro

Mauro, I've never worked on a TO. But, be aware that this is an AC/DC set with all the tube filaments in series. If one tube's filament burns out, then none of them will light.
Check for continuity across the heater pins of each tube.

Thanks a lot. You were helpful.

:Hi Mauro...I recently finished an A600 and it works beautifully. It was not terribly difficult...hardest part was getting it out of the case! I will watch this post and try to help...just be really careful with the tubes...one of them (1L6) is close to $50 USD!

Hi friend,
I find A DK92 tube in place of IL6 . I suppose this is a compatible one. Do you think it could work as qell as the original . After a little search on the net I have found an IL6 brand new at €22 , I tink i will buy it. What kind of damage did you find in your A600?
Thanks for your help.
Mauro

The DK92 is not a proper substitute for the 1L6, but is good to use while you are restoring the set. Just in case you make a mistake you won't damage an expensive 1L6. You must use the 1L6 when you do your alignment as the Dk92 throws the alignment off quite a bit.

As I told , searching on the net, I' ve foundall the tubes with exception for the ballast 501A. I'm going to buy them before they end. The price for the 1l6 is interesting : 22Euros . I am not an expert in repairing old radio, I would know if some particular precautions shuld be taken in the replacement of the tubes. CCould I try to not replace capacitors. They look to be good and in good shape.
Thanks

:Mauro, unless the caps are modern (ie not paper) I would replace them...not worth taking a chance. The ballast tube can be replaced with a solid state device from Antique Electronics tubesandmore.com. That's what I did and it works great...anout $17 USD I think. As for precautions with the tubes, just be sure you've replaced the caps and checked for bad resistors. The use a variac and iso transformer to poser it if gradually. Good luck! It's not too hard.

As I am trying to repair this radio, I found that the 3V4 tube is faulty. Having some difficulty in finding this one, may I use a most common DL94 tube?
And what about N19 N18 dl95 Tubes, are they alternatives to N4V

As fussy as these sets are to filament voltage I would try to find a 3V4

Hi,
I am desperate. Today I Got all my new tubes (1l6 included). Ihave replaced the bad 3V4 tube, tried to power on the radio and nothing happened. I took a look under the chassis and saw a component not soldered at one end. The first end is connected at the CR1 negative end. I suppose it should be connected at the pin33 of S3. Trying to solder it at that pin , nothing happened. Could anybody help me? Thank you

Hi
I suggest you download the manual and schematic from this site. The neg end of CR1 does not connect to S-3. One small mistake in wiring can mean buying a new set of tubes again.

Mauro, I sense that maybe we're grasping at straws here. This is not an ideal set to start out on before learning radio basis. I fear that by making wiring adjustments to the set, you may dig yourself into a deeper hole.
I think troubleshooting in a systematic manner is what's called for.

Hi Mauro,
The schematic I have for the A600 shows coming off the minus of CR1 is a .047 mfd cap and a wire from the minus of CR1 to a connection on J3 (where the 220 volt adapter plugs in if used). The mains line from the power plug hooks to the other connection of J3.

Hi Mauro,
CR2 is a selenium rectifier. It is similar to CR1 in the radio. It is located in the voltage adapter. It is probably rated at 117 volts AC input and 130 volts DC output at 75 milliamps. Probably measures 1 inch length, 1/2 inch width and 1 inch high.

In my radio, in place of CR2 I find a diode 1N4006420.
In place of the selenium diode CR1, I find two little diodes with ureadeable codes. Anyway, in the original part list i can see two different part numbers: CR2 is P/N 212-9 , CR1 is P/n 212-13.
Maybe they were electrically similar but different for size and form.
May I replace the R4A-R4B resistors Candohm 620ohm/15Watt-1200Ohm/7Watt by two normal resistors with same values?

Mauro,
Someone in the past probably found the seleniums weak or bad and replaced them with silicon diodes. I don't know why you can't replace the two resistors in the voltage converter with separate power resistors of the same resistance and same or better wattage.
