Colonial Radio Info Needed
2/22/2000 11:32:09 PMVinton Roush
Can anyone help me with information about this radio? It's a Colonial m# 985514, according to the label, made by the Colonial Radio Corp. in Buffalo, NY (I assume this means it was made before Colonial was bought out by Sears, Roebuck). I have never been able to find it listed in Mallory or Riders under either the Colonial or Sears names. Does anyone know anything about this radio?
Thanks in advance...

Hi Vinton

Could that be a serial or part number? It's unlike any other Colonial or Sears Model numbers. If you list the tubes we may be able to find a circuit to match.

Norm,
Thanks for the reply. The number I gave is not identified, it just appears on the label after "Colonial Portable Radio" and Superheterodyne." There is a serial number below that: 934500. The tube compliment is 1A7G, 1N5G, 1H5G, and 1Q5G. Does this maybe use a solid state rectifier?

That was a popular tube lineup in portable radios built around 1940. I didn't find a Colonial schematic but you should be able to use the RCA BT-42 drawing which has the same tubes.

Does the radio have an AC cord? Most of these radios were only battery operated. Your 1Q5 tube has a .1 amp filament. All the other tubes .05 amp. Most radios run on AC had all the tube filaments wired in series with same current ratings. These radios would use a 1A5 or 3Q5 for output. They draw .05 amps filament current.

Selenium rectifiers were used but I don't think with these early tubes. If your radio did use a selenium rectifier it will look like a stack of square plates.

Here are two Sears model to check: 6266 and 7321. They both use 1C5 instead of 1Q5 for output but these tubes are interchangeable.

Norm,
Thanks for the input. I checked those two numbers here on Nostalgia Air. The schematic that came up for the 6266 was actually for m#6264/6265, and the 7321 is a battery or AC radio. My Colonial does not have an AC cord - strictly battery. I'll pull the chassis out of the cabinet and see if there may be some other identifying numbers elsewhere on it. Sound like the 6266 may be on the right track.

I've sent you the Sears 6266 schematic. Let us know if it matches.

Hi Vinton, You might realize this but if it's a battery only set it won't have a rectifier, that's used to convert the AC mains power to DC for the radio. Cheers, Don Black.
