8g005 not working on SW bands
1/23/2006 7:57:37 PMTim Mize
I have a 8G005 that works on the BC band but not the SW bands. The oscillator seems to die when switched to the SW bands. Any clue's other than recapping the whole radio. I like to try and leave my radio's as original as possible. I will continue to check coils, switches and such, who knows, I just might get it! Thanks and 73s

Check coils and switches. A weak tube may not oscillate well at high frequencies. I would check all coils and switches before ever checking the tube.

Hi

In your radio it's a 12SA7. Tube could be weak as Thomas mentioned. Even if an oscillator tube tests good it may not operate on higher, short wave, frequencies.

:I am going to order a new osc. tube. This is has a 1LA6 in it I think, I dont remember the exact number, I'm at work right now so I cant look to be sure, but its the 1 series for sure. But your point is well taken, I will order a new tube tomorrow! Thanks for the posts! 73s Tim N7XAU

Before you order that tube you should probably check all the voltages around the 1LA6. Low voltages can make a tube look bad.

Guys,

The service data for this radio shows it uses a 1LC6 tube. My Sams substitution guides show the 1LA6 as a substitute for the 1LC6. Is it possible the 1LA6 may not work properly in this radio?

It is possible that the tube is weak, but like I said before, you should be checking coils and such first. Checking voltages is also an excellent idea. Then, if you find nothing wrong, replace the tube.

The tube layout in the radio shows a 1LA6 for the osc. I ordered a new tube and that did it! Its pretty hot, need to go though and align everything now. Glad I didnt have to recap it! Thanks for all the posts and happy listening!

Regarding your wanting to leave it as original as possible, metalized film condensers fit nicely inside of the orange cardboard tubes used for Zenith condensers. If you find that your radio will operate for no longer than 20 minutes without sounding distorted, you need to replace the audio condensers. You probably have leaky condensers elsewhere in the radio as well. Leaky condensers, even if leakage is in the millions of ohms, will affect performance everywhere. A leaky condenser can hold down screen grid voltage, where one is used for filtering B+ to a screen grid. A leaky condenser, even in the 10s of millions of ohms, can keep your AVC from going negative on strong stations, causing distortion in the RF sections. ...And, of course, a leaky condenser can ruin audio quality in the audio section.

A new tube will often hide a problem with low voltages. This radio should be recapped and the electrolytics replaced, any out of spec resistors should be replaced, this should be done before an alignment is attempted.

Your radio may be working, but it is not fixed.
