You probably have faulty condensers in the circuitry of that channel. Condensers must have no leakage, not even in the millions of ohms. You could also have a faulty resistor or two, or could have a faulty tube. A crackling noise most likely means that a condenser is at fault. Be sure to disconnect each condenser that you test. Your meter will spring upward for all values higher than .001 MFD, and then will fall back down to infinity. For all condensers, if the meter lingers above where it started by any amount, then the condenser being tested is at fault.

I see this is referred to ion another place.....Since
I am not familiar with that model how about a fil in on the units capabilities E.G. is it solely a record player or a combo of radio as well. Newer stuff than an antique radio, surely, since stereo is involved. My thought is if merely a phono that a bad phono cartridge / loose ground wire shielding/ or erratic mute switch under the changer might be the source of your problem. To check the cartridge, it would be permissible to inject induced 60~ hum into the R and L terminals of the cartridge by individually touching them with the tip of a miniature screwdriver held with a moistened fingertip.See if an equal degree of hum emanates from each speaker. If so suspect the cartridge output. Also if the cartridge lines to the amp were connector terminated, it would also be possible to reverse them to see if the problem shifted to the other channel.

Does the set operate ok without external speakers? If it does check your external speaker. Does it sound ok in the left channel? You could have a bad connection, ground problems. You aren't pluging speaker into some other output jack e. g., tape record.
