:Hello All,
: Now that the hum has been eliminated I need to solve problems associated with the band switch. It looks to me like this band switch is an ordinary 4 pole double throw rotary switch. 2 switches are damaged. The antenna switch has one terminal snapped off. The other has both positions shorted together and the pole (connection to the tuning capacitor, RF side) connected to neither one. So I have to replace that swich. Also, whoever owned this radio before, disconnected the antenna conections from the RF coil. So I don't know where on the RF coil the two wires go.
: But the radio is pretty much alive and sounds very good. I have to use clip leads to make the correct connecftions from the RF coil to the tuning capacitor.
: If someone has a diagram of the switch, or a picture of the connections from a working 618, it would be very helpful.
:The service data doesn't have pictures like this.
:
:Thanks,

:Hello Again All,
: I'm revisiting this set. Does anyone have a better copy of the schematic? The one in Riders is almost illegible. I am about to use a DPDT switch because the only part of the band switch affected is the part for the antenna coil. The other part of the band switch is ok. I can find no suitable substitutes for the original switch anywhere. I ordered a few but nothing fits. I don't want to drill holes in the chassis, and if the wires run outside the chassis they will pick up.
: There are other problems. Whoever worked on this set before, disconnected the wires to the primaries of the antenna coil (actually two transformers on the same coil form). So I can't tell which connections on the coil are for the primaries. Also, there's a mica capacitor attached to the antenna coil that I cannot locate on the schematic.
: Please help if you can.

:I have put a mark-up of that set with enhancemets of points of interest. . . . . booooooootommmmm of page.
:
:
:There is the outdoor antenna / aerial terminal which comes down thru a 455 L/C trap and on into the rotor of S2 section A which switches in the antenna to the very FEW turns of coupling in of either the SW top coil (with S2 at its CW position) or the BCB botom coil(with S2 at its CCW position)
:
:
:Then there is the SW2 section B, which has its rotor connected to the 6A8 grid cap and opts to either switch in the upper SW coil resonating winding (not too many turns on this one) at its max CW position or else it switches in the bottom BCB coil winding (MANY turns on this one), when at its max CCW position.
:
:
:Moving over to the T3 oscillator we are just switching ONE connection each on the SW2 C and D sections, which would be engaging the max CW contacts. . . . with no connection being made to the unused terminals in the max CCW position (BCB).
:
:
:Both rotors of SW2 C and D share the common junction of the padder condenser and its fixed value series companion.
:
:
:The sole connection on each C and D section that their perspective rotors engage into is the max CW contacts so that the bottom BCB winding of each section is being shorted across, thereby just leaving the UPPER SW coils then being in circuit.
:
:
:That's about it . . . should be able to follow the lead dress of the old switch in assigning the connections to the new switch or interpolate on any connections missing.

Thanks very much,

:Edd,
: I understand the schematic, it's the actual part that I cannot see where the two primary wires go. The secondary wires are obvious because they have trimmer capacitors connected to them (each has one).
: The rotary switch arrived today and it looks like an almost exact replacement. I'm going to install it a little later and let everyone know how it works.
: I also notice that one of the wires coming from the tuning eye fell off from what it was soldered to in the schematic. I'm sure that by process of elimination, and looking at the schematic I will find where the wire fell off of.
: I think the radio will work even if the eye tube is not hooked up.
