If the dial is glass and the opposite edge of the glass is painted, you can likely aim the light through the glass so that it reflects off of the other edge. Both sides of the dial will be illuminated almost equally, but the other side may be a bit greenish due to the light traveling through the glass. I have no idea why a manufacturer wouldn't use brown tinted glass instead of green tinted glass, but green was often used.

If the dial is plastic, the same effect can be achieved, though as plastic ages, light doesn't like to travel through it as efficiently. At any rate, for any dial of this type, when the numbers are painted on the glass or plastic, the bulb's filament can be lined up with the edge of the glass, and light will shine through it and illuminate the numbers.

If you wish to change the radio so that it has two pilot lamps, sometimes this can be done. Let me know. Depends on the physical structure of the dial as well as the way the light is wired.
