There were a couple of ways that could have been done, and without a manufacturer's name the only option I can think of is a battery charger that was based upon an electroplating circuit. The charger could safely charge the carbon-zinc type batteries, which was what set the unit apart from other chargers.

Do you have a physical description to work from? 2 light bulbs in the unit- a 40 watt and a 7.5 watt bulb? Or did it feature just a single vacum tube like a type 82? Are we talking a 40/50's vintage or a 20's vintage? 60's vintage?
