Airline Radio Maker Identification

Hi! I know Montgomery Ward had different manufacturers for the airline radios they sold. I would like to find the maker for the Airline models 62-416 or the 62-316 from 1937/38/39 vintage. It has an oval dial mounted to the left of the case with a kind of rainbow band selector, and the speaker, some with deco cut-outs on the right. I think they are beautiful!! I think Coronado may have made them, but I am not sure. Thanks! William

Hi, Many Airline and Coronado sets were manufactured by a Chicago company that, at that time period, was named "Tri-City Radio Corporation". I have a 62-304 (Wards response in wood to the other "bullet" radio cases) that was manufactured in Chicago, and does not have an annotation of "B.R.C.", which is a pretty good indication of it being a "Tri-City" product.

Often in the Coronado sets, there is an annotation of "B.R.C.", which is probably not "Tri-City", and based on some of the chassis I have pillaged for parts, it appears that many Firestone and some Goodyear sets were nearly identical to the B.R.C. chassis Coronados.

I do not know for sure with Coronado, but if they manufactured any "in house", they most likely would have been manufactured in Minneapolis.

So there was a connection on some of the radios at any rate.

Hi, I own an Airline model 62-313 and might be able to help you. If you still have the original label inside the cabinet, the manufacturer is usually identified in one corner. In the case with my radio, there is a "W.G. Series 2DL" meaning the radio was manufactured by Well-Gardner and it is their Series 2DL model. Rider's has identical schematics for the Wards Airline 62-313 and the Wells-Gardner 2DL. Wells-Gardner was a major manufacturer for Wards, as was Belmont and some others. The Bunis' books and other reference books will have those names. The model number for Airline radios often gives the maker of the radio too.

I hope I'm doing this correctly... If you still have the original label inside the cabinet of the radio, that should give you a clue who made the radio. I own a 62-313 Airline console radio that has a W.G. Series 2DL on the corner of the label. This indicates that the radio was manufactured by Well-Gardner of Chicago, Ill., model series 2DL. Rider's has the same design listed under Wards' 62-313 and Wells-Gardner' 2DL. There were several manufacturers for Wards at the time, Belmont Radio Corporation (B.R.C.) was another as well as several other smaller ones.
