Philco 41-280 "slide rule dial "
10/5/2005 10:37:17 PMBill T
Can someone help me with the following? I recently purchased a Philco model 41-280 at road side in the Mohawk Valley N.Y . Nice but far from complete. No knobs ,escutheon,no dial scale,no pointer, no string . Enough missing to create a good project . The problem I have is that I do not know what was behind the (non existing) dial scale. As I mentioned I do not have a original dial pointer . Since I can not string it without one I have made a cat whisker type pointer for now.I read from various sources this was a “slide rule” scale. All that is there on mine are the metal backing plate and brackets for the glass. Can anyone fill in the details on the pointer and what is behind the dial scale? I want to make it right if possible. There is a spring clip with a piece of white plastic hanging off one side of the scale frame. Not enough to figure anything out from. Thanks for any help !

Bill,
Here is a photo of a 41-280 dial...looks like a black backing behind the dial scale...not the best of photos as there is a flash reflection but maybe it will help.

Dennis, Thanks for close up Photo! I can see that the backgroumd is typical Philco red-brown felt .Like you said flash obscures the pointer, but still best idea of actual yet. I think now that the plastic part I have suspends the brown felt behind the dial scale. The pointer must be between the felt and scale to contrast it and make it stand out. This seems a normal setup. The dial is at a angle and the felt needed to be mounted the same angle.Instead of mounting it to the metal frame they mounted it to a plastic sheet hung behind the scale. The "slide rule " could be just a fine pointer across the scale and lighted from behind . I think I can go on remake the plastic sheet and glue some background felt to it.Makes sense in general.I suspect there are some details (holes) to this felt that make this dial light up right.I am sure from the photo it is a normal dial at an angle. Thanks !!!

Bill, The radio Den referenced is one I restored. It now has a new eschucan and new pushbuttons. Some superior reproductions are available - and there are NOS dial scales for the 41-280 available too. By the way, the dial pointer is a very thin black vertical wire like gizmo.

I'll have to admit, after I recapped it and aligned it, my old Philco 41-280 is the best performing AM radio I have.

:Carl , Glad to hear how happy you are with yours !I've done one Philco console before. A 42-400 and it turned out well. That restoration was mainly electrical.I want to take my time and have this come out just as good. I like the look of this (41-280)radio better. There is a lot of stuff missing so I appreciate the feedback you gave on the pointer. It also sounds typical of Philco of this period.Does yours have the plastic peice I described behind the dial scale ? How close was I at guessing what is behind the glass ? Is the needle between the felt and the dial glass ? Thanks

Bill,

Radiodaze.com has listed on their web site and in their catalog several items for the Philco 41-280 including a dial glass reproduction and an escutcheon.

:Radiodoc , Thanks for the direction to Radiodaze. They had all the peices I needed (except the pointer) as repo's.Like most stores their online info is less than what they really have. They were helpful.I think that they have seen a few of these things ! I almost have all the parts I need. The best resource is this site and forum. Thanks again !

I constructed a sliding pointer for my set out of thin brass sheet and soldered a small brass rod to the pointer. I am not very good at drawing, but if you want I can send you a sketch to get you started.
