Nordmende Tannhauser "Rever berations" buldge

I picked up a giant hulking Nordmende Tannhauser Radio. From what I can initially find out, it was a top of the line consumer radio from the 1950's.

It looks close to this but not exactly

In any case, on the back panel it has an intentional buldge labeled "Rever berations". Taking off the back panel underneath this is a connector with two connections. Behind that is a cap and some wires going somewhere which I did not investigate.

I'm curious as to what this is. The back panel is not "punched out" to allow access to this. Is this a connection for another set of speakers for a hall or reverb affect?

Paid $80 for this radio, very clean, works on AM/FM and one of the 2 SW bands. 6 speakers, 7 tone controls, 11 tubes. Holy cow.

There was a phase in the 1950s when people put reverb or echo machines in their cars so that the audio delayed between the front and back speakers (if a rear speaker was added). Not sure if people were also into this in their houses. In 1950 stereo wasn't all that common yet, so it is possible that a reverb product could have been somewhat popular.

Hi Gary

I don't know that special Nordmende, but i have two Philips radios with "Reverbeo".
Both have a built in spring reverb unit (made by Gibbs). And both these radios were "top of the line" products at that time - as your Tannhäuser was.

Kind regards from Switzerland, Walter Haring
