Transformer rating

I am building a power supply & need some help on determining the current capability of the transformer. The transformer weighs 8lbs & has four out windings. (9volt),(12,45,77,90volt), (17,25volt),(15volt). The high voltages should be ok. Can I use the 9 volt winding, regulated down to filament voltages? The 9&15 volt windings are 28 gauge, others are 18 gauge. I plan on constructing a hybrid ic, zener type supply. Should I test by loading the winding & measuring the current & the voltage drop? Many thanks, Dewey

Hi Dewey

Depends on how much current you plan to draw? Can you use a heavier winding for filaments? Twenty eight gauge will supply enough current for portable radios. Winding should be heavier if you are powering 01A's.

: You can also try to rewind the transformer. I've had some success in converting old 6 and 12 volt filament transformers for other voltages. Particularly useful if you need a lower voltage. You can rewind with heavier wire and get more current out to power some of those old tubes. Here are some resources:

Also ARRL has a great article on their tech service web site but you may need to be a member.
