Silvertone Model J
9/8/2005 2:38:56 PMDarrel
This weekend I found a Silvertone Model J (R4433). It has 4-26, 1-27, 2-71a and 80 all in a metal cabinet. The radio will require a lot of clean up and work but I also got a Crosley "D" Musicone speaker. Anyone know if this speaker will work with this radio?

Thanks,

Hi Darrel

Here is information on your radio:

Crosley Musicone speaker will work. Be careful not to touch speaker connections while power is on. Plate B+ from your 71A's are on these connections.

Thanks Norm, I'll watch out for that B+. It looks like first I have a lot of tar to clean up and a lot of transformers to check out before I apply power. Also, can I use 4 uf electrolytic capacitors for the 3uf? it looks like there are a lot of 1, 2 and 3uf capacitors in a tar filled can.

Hi Darrel

You can use 4 mf caps. I would probably use 10 mf @ 450 volt caps. Voltage may be a little higher but hum reduced. In the late 1920's large capacitors were expensive.

Be sure the power transformer doesn't have a problem. You can check it by removing your 80 tube and apply power. Tubes should light but the transformer should not get hot.

Thanks, I will probably go with the 10mf then. First I do need to go through the wiring and test out the transformer, looks like a family of mice made there home under the chassis for a long time. The tubes do all test good, the 80 is a Cunningham globe and all the rest are shouldered RCA/Cunninghams.
