caps

Are foil caps from 1932 still good? I think they are grid bypass caps.(i don't have a schematiic for this set) The brown coating on the outside is coming off. Also, are the resistors still good, they are the type that look like bar with wire wraped around at the ends. Heres something funny and stupid, some one replaced the #47 tube with a #84 tube. Why did they do that?

Butch: The two tubes are different animals, not substitutes.

Regarding 1932 "foil" caps: The "foil" is OK, but the paper insulation is prone to failure. Replace them without question.

Resistors: check with an ohmmeter. If more than, say, 30% off, replace. You may have to disconnect one lead of the resistors to check -- by analyzing the set's schematic, you should be able to determine if a lead must be lifted.

doug i know they are different the 47 is a power amplifier and the 84 is a full wave rect.i meant whoever made this sub. was even goofier than me i will refrain from making posts when i'm tired and don't know what i'm talking about.butch

thanks for all of the help. I'm currently recapping the radio now.
