Manuel: the AK 55 uses seven tubes: two 24's, two 27's, two 45's and one 80. The socket next to the antenna terminal is not a tube socket, it is for the external electrodynamic speaker.

Steve, you may need to take out a second mortgage for those two 45s. I bought a used one from RadioDaze. I really don't see the sense in buying NOS for tubes this expensive.

Manuel,

My 55 has small metal plates riveted to the chassis which ID the specific tubes and point to what socket they go in. Doug is correct about the 45's...I hate to even fire up any of the radios I have that use them for fear of blowing one out. It's too bad there isn't a low-cost substitute.

Good luck,
Jeff

Bill Turner sells a 45 look-a-like with a miniature tube imbeded in a 45-style plug. It's a good idea, but it didn't work in my AK 55.

NOS or used 45s will require a second mortgage on your house!

eBay has the tubes in the ST style for reasonable prices. You can buy singles starting at $9.99. Here is a matched pair that ends in 2 hours and 55 minutes. The brands do not match in this pair, however. It'd be more attractive to purchase two tubes in matching brands.

Manuel is the one needing tubes. Fortunately I got all NOS tubes for my AK-55 many years ago. Also try www.tubeworld.com on the net. They often have cheaper used tubes that test very good. I've never gotten a bad tube from them like other vendors who don't test.
