Electrolytic resistor overheating ¿why?
3/31/2005 4:35:52 PMMILTON VALERIO
Hi,Im dealing with a Westinghouse little Jewel H-126. This unit uses a resistor between the 2 lugs of the electrlytic capacitor and from a few days to present it bacame to overheat as the point of crack it.
I check all the circuits and all seems to be in order.
¿any idea?

You didn’t say if the radio was still playing and producing audio, but if so,some possibilities:

Bad/gassy 35A5 audio output tube.
Leakage in the 50 ufd power supply electrolytics.
Likewise a high ESR on the first electrolytic, would tax the second unit into a higher than normal current thru the filter/dropping resistor, but this should also initiate an audible hum in the sets audio.
Leaky .01 ufd coupling cap into the 35A5’s first grid, initiating bias upset along with more current being consumed by the most current hungry stage , the AF output stage.
If not any of the above, the reduced B+ also feeds the first three RF tubes screen grids and plates through their circuitry.

Opening that reduced B+ wire after that resistor and inserting a series milliameter during troubleshooting might prove quite helpful in pinpointing the problem area.
