The speaker in your radio is an early high impedance magnetic type of speaker. The voice coil, as you may call it, is a rather large coil of wire that lies stationary, and is wound around the magnet. The armature that is connected to the speaker cone lies in a gap in the magnet. The high impedance coil alters the magnetic field, which normally sets up a certain magnetism in the armature. When the magnetic field is altered, it reacts with the armature's magnetic field. Since, during any given frequency, the voltage is always changing thereby changing the magnetism, any magnetism that is created in the armature by any given magnetism of the magnet-coil assembly will never be the same as any new magnetism created by the magnet-coil assembly, and so the armature will continue to react with the coil-magnet assembly until no more voltage changes are applied to the coil. This high impedance type coil is used because the magnets available at the time were not that strong. A high impedance coil makes very efficient use of the current supplied by the output tube, and also creats a very strong magnetic field. Furthermore the high impedance coil may be directly coupled to the output tube without an output transformer.
